The “Walk of Remembrance” marks one of various events leading up to the creation and opening of a Memorial Garden in St Monans to commemorate the Fishing Disaster of 1875 when 37 fishermen, 21 from St Monans and 16 from Cellardyke, were lost in a storm off the coast of East Anglia.
Returning from the Herring season, the “Thane” (KY1071), “Beautiful Star” (KY1298), “Quest” (KY221), “Vigilante” (KY1214), and “Janet Anderson” (KY1 176), headed home on 19th December only to be swamped by a storm which took the lives of all on board, along with three other Cellardyke fishermen lost from three separate vessels.
On this the 150th Anniversary of the tragedy, a Memorial Garden is being planned for St Monans to create a permanent reminder and tribute to those who lost their lives at sea.
